While we live in a society where man’s spirit is crushed at birth; where hope is absent and poverty is severe, demagogues thrive in this melancholy. By offering hollow bonbons, sugar-coated in enticing wrapping such as “aspirational” to naive upstarts, they easily tickle the fancies and enslave their souls.

The vocabulary of pretentiousness is nowhere as encyclopedic as in their weeklies. To these sybarites, greed has no moderation. Remember, your Hermes scarves are useless dahlins’, its hot where you’re going.

In a recent article I read, a senior columnist proposes an ethics body to be formed by journalists to “hear and decide the complaints about their abusive peers.” It’s quite amusing, that someone, somewhere, is coming up with a solution. But hey, didn’t it take almost a decade for their own daily to come to their senses and fathom the contemptuous self-serving dignitary that it bred and nurtured? The line to get your passport stamped doesn’t start at the Fort but can only go down from there. Sniff, sniff!

The PROBE Team has done a survey and says that a reporter takes at least P5,000 a month, an editor at least P10,000 pesos and a columnist at least P15,000 especially during elections! Geez, lifestyle writers wouldn’t even bother with these nickels and dimes. Pushing the art of self-promotion to its toxic limits and masquerading it with spectacular events and public relations, columnist’s profits can easily go up to six figures. Not to mention hotels, caviar and cruises all in the name of “lifestyle journalism”. When it rains it certainly pours. But now that drought is upon them, can we call a shaman for some acid-rain.

Should we wax nostalgic or should they be encased in a wax museum?

Another case in point: the death of actor Rico Yan brought forth a superfluous national outpour of grief propelled by television. In its aftermath, print-media took stock to the hype and tried to make sense of the brouhaha.

But when the same happened to a socialite friend of the guardians of high society’s fourth estate, millions of pesos worth of precious column-centimeters were devoted to beatify their dearly departed. A “cannibalism of grief” as some would say; a case of canonizing or denying ones guilt if I may say.

Will someone send me the hand-sanitizer?

The declaration of demagogues is set in stone. But when they stumble and fall into disgrace, their alibis are all for naught. Amen.

A big part of having HIV is the many tests and numbers that come along with the condition. Not being afraid/intimidated by them is the best advice I can give.
Make your HIV blood count numbers your friends. Trust me, you have no choice at days end. Embrace the numbers. They are there to help you, not hinder you.

At first it seems daunting to hear about Lymphocyte Markers, your CD4's and CD8's and the most important, your complete blood count and your personal HIV viral load.
Once you get your head around the numbers, the HIV journey becomes much easier.
My most recent test results are very comforting considering I've had HIV for eight years already.
Wow, it seems like yesterday I was told.
I feel so great about my HIV.
It's under control and I have time to help others.
What more could a man want?

My CD4's are 411 which is fantastic news. The higher the better when it comes to your CD4's.
My viral load is 18,409 which is also great news.

They don't even look at you until they reach 100,000 readers.
So for the moment I'll stay off the AVR drugs because my liver and kidneys are getting such a great break. If my viral load increases and reaches 100,000, then I'll start my drugs again. Or unless my doctor recommends it. I ALWAYS listen to my doctor.

I stopped last year for a few personal reasons. And as a result of that decision, my HIV is now detectable again. I don't regret the pill holiday but I'm determined now to become undetectable again. I'm eating healthier and really trying to focus on my inner spirit. Yoga.

So when you get tested for HIV, expect these numbers. Every single person in the world who has HIV has these numbers to deal with.

I'm **** *******, a 21 yr old Filipino studying here in San Francisco for almost 4 years now. Don't worry I'm not like the Gucci Gang I'm studying here in the States because i was awarded a scholarship with the help of my Auntie and of course my hard earned hi grades. To get my living expenses like rent and extra money i wait tables and do the occasional odd jobs working in the school library,food delivery, whatever is available and decent.

I'm not complaining i like working for my money till I graduate next year and hopefully get a good paying job as a financial consultant or something in Banking. Ive been reading your blog with my Filipino classmates here for quite sometime now. All of them not on scholarship cause they're well off but i would say their true friends till the end not like the ones that stole your money.

Since my parents are not rich and cant come here for Christmas. I spend it with the my Aunty's family or with classmates adopting me for the holidays celebrating Christmas with their visiting families. Ive grown used to it already being here for a long time. My only luxury is calling and hearing my Dad and Moms voice greeting me.

Last Christmas was the only time i was able to save enough money to buy ticket and spend Christmas in Manila with my family. I paid for half and my family paid the other half.

Me and my other Filipino classmates are always excited to see your post and see whats happening in your life and health. I haven't had the reason to write you before or comment because i don't really know any of the people mentioned in your blog till you brought up Embassy.

Embassy is such a disgrace..a good place for bad deeds. Not only drug haus and gamble haus but a whore haus. People are mislead to live a life not suited to their status. Pretending to be someone else. I would say i would never go back to that place in case i have enough money to go back to the Phil. Satisfying my curiosity once is enough.

Morality is indeed dead in that place...

Not being back in Manila for 4 years and not knowing the party scene. Me and my classmate decided to go to Embassy 8 months ago to meet hes friend that frequents the place and knows a lot of people there. When we got there ahead of my classmates friend my classmate called hes friend asking how we can get in. He was told by hes friend that hes name is in the VIP list and we should just ask the reception desk.

As we entered and got seated for about an hour enjoying our drinks we were minding our own business till a bouncer came near us and told us that the table was reserved for VVIP that was already here, and we had to give up the table. I was so pissed and being new to the place and not wanting any trouble we obliged and just headed for the bar . We saw a beautiful girl(apparently a beauty Queen) and a gay man with the bouncer. I even heard the girl say to hes gay companion who are these people in our seat they don't look VVIP to me giving us a condescending glance. (mind you we were decently dressed wearing slacks and collared polo shirts)(Freaking Snobs!!!)

Then we saw the gay man handing a Php 500 to the bouncer. I was amazed how we were treated, not wanting to ruin our night we just stood near the bar and try to forget the incident.

Finally my classmates friend who placed us on the guest list arrived..So we were introduced and drank some more beers. My classmate and I still being pissed at the incident told hes friend about what happened.

As we pointed at the girl and the gay companion. We were told by my classmates friend that girl is a Hi Class Whore. I know the gay pimp because that's what I'm here for. He was instructed by his uncle to give money to the pimp. I saw my classmates friend wave to the gay man instructing him to come and secretly handed him an envelop containing 30k (which he showed us earlier and we were shocked) then the gay man went back to the girl( the so called beauty queen whore). Who looks down on us even though she knows what she is...VVIP my ass!!! if that's the criteria of VVIP they can all go to hell i rather stick with my odd part time jobs in the States than be a VVIP pretending whore...!!! at least I'm paying for my beer with my hard earned money which i think is ridiculously priced in that CLUB...

My classmates friend said hes uncle is doing business with a Congressman and the Congressman wanted a Beauty Queen named Abigail Cruz a recent winner of a beauty contest and hes uncle paid for it as a gift. In fairness i don't think the pimp is Tim Yap (the person you always mention in your blog, but it could have been) (and i have nothing against gay people i have gay cousins and their the best I'm sure they wont end up being a pimp!!!) I never saw Abigail Cruz in my life and never even heard of her. but i will never forget that look she and her gay friend gave us as we left our table...

Then a man in hes late 30s who was a Congressman with 2 bodyguards arrived, my classmates friend left us and greeted him and came back to us shortly. The Congressman didn't even stay for 4 minutes and left with Abigail Cruz alone which my classmates friend said was requested by the Congressman all paid and delivered by his uncle.

Wow i was shocked how such a posh place in a posh area would harbor those practices.. I said to my classmates friend not wanting to believe what just happened I said maybe that's the boyfriend and both of you are pulling my leg. I didn't bother to get the Congressman's name not wanting to put my classmates friend in an awkward position.

My classmates friend said the boyfriend of that so called beauty Queen Whore is a TV announcer who's show was recently sacked named Paolo Bediones...not really a top TV personality and had some odd acting stints in some B movies.(I never even heard of this character also) I better start saving for a TV in my dorm and get the Filipino Channel in the States i wouldn't even recognize this people if they jump in front and bit me..

According to my classmates friend. This Paolo Bediones was trying to get back to the graces of the channel he use to work for by trying to come up with a show that will indirectly discredits you. (The fucker doesn't even know you and hes going to discredit you) Have you heard of this person?

Apparently due to the immense popularity of your blog and its positive effect to the channels rating which is going of the roof. That Paolo Guy is planning of inventing up a show for a rival channel to indirectly discredit you so the supporters of your chosen channel will stop watching. (I also heard hes a gay hater but apparently is a closet gay pretending to be macho.(that's sick i hope my gay cousins strangle this pretentious being) Maybe hes the one selling hes girlfriend since he has no successful shows.

Dear Readers,

This reminds me of a time at Embassy (the one and only time I've been there) when I had to go to the CR. I was busting to pee, waiting in the long line alone. When DJ saw me, he came over and grabbed my arm and dragged me out of the line. He told me I didn't ever have to wait in line because I was with him. He proceeded to take me to the very first position in line, explaining to me that HE did NOT have to cue up to pee. He just simply went to the front of the line and went in next. Fuck the people already lined up and waiting. He did not even aknowledge them. It's like they were garbage in his way. And YES, Celine NEVER waits in line to pee. In fact all of them just go to the very front while the mainstream revellars just pinch their legs tighter and wait for the blow heads to be done. While I was going to the bathroom, he snorted a line of coke. I will NEVER EVER forget how humiliated and shocked I was for doing this to other people. At first I had no idea what he was doing. I SHOULD have told him to let go and let me wait like a proper human being. But I didn't and I still can't believe I did it. In Australia, you would be beat to a pulp if you tried something do disgusting. But in Manila, the people just take it up the ass over and over again. I remember this guy staring at me when we were waiting to go in. I can't explain to you how I felt. I felt humiliated for myself. I thought to myself how my friends in Australia would DIE if they saw me do this. But DJ told me it was normal practice to do this to others. This is another reason I HATE this club so much and will never stop nipping at its heals. This has nothing to do with Tim Yap personally, except for the fact that he represents this club therefore supports this practice. Tim is the snobbiest person in Manila. He promotes the entire VIP culture as if it were a religion. I will not rest until this club changes its practice and starts treating EVERY Manila-ite with respect, honor and decency. Until this day happens, I will be watching and printing what I see and hear about Embassy.

Dear Tim,

You say that your club is a decent place. HOW can you allow the majority of your customers to be treated like this by the minority? I really want to know how you and your mates justify this blatant disregard for the REAL people in your club.
I AM laying off you mate, but I will never rest until you see HOW people feel when you allow this rubbish to continue. Your entire concept of VIP, VVIP, VVVVVIP has got to go.
The days of Embassy are numbered. Trust me. You do not deserve to have a club which treats its patrons with so much disrespect.

I STILL feel bad for what I did that night. I fully expect to be punched out if I did this anywhere else in the world. WHY do people except this in Embassy? Why do filipinos roll over and take it up the ass so often? WHy? Because if they say anything, they will be kicked out in 2.5 seconds. Thats why!

Simple Truth

My name is Brian Shane Gorrell.
I'm a very proud blogger/advocate/activist who was born and raised in Canada but grew up in Australia although I feel very much like an international citizen, having lived in Europe, America and Asia.

I’ve always been a person with a very positive outlook, in spite of experiencing my share of ups and downs throughout life. In 2002, I was diagnosed with HIV and so I became an advocate from day one.
I’m a devoted vehicle for change and as a passionate communicator, my objectives are lofty but achievable nonetheless. Assisting the advocacy community to help eliminate HIV-related STIGMA is a primary goal that is close to my heart. However, my type of advocacy spreads over a wide range of issues.

I started this blogging journey under the most dire of circumstances, when my ex lover fraudulently obtained my life savings (US70,000) leaving me with nothing and eventually fled the Philippines for San Fransisco in disgrace. I'll never stop trying to recover my money because it's everything I have.
My health is a priority now and always will be. DJ took away my security and walked away from the devastation he caused leaving me with nothing except worry and fear.

Millions of people have read my blog now. The energy I put into it comes from my heart mind and soul. The blog is my healer and ultimately brought me to this wonderful place where I find myself today.
I'm still fighting for justice and my money. I'll never stop.

I understand the responsibilities of being a blogger-advocate. I know myself to be the voice for many people. People who may never be heard, or have their passions acknowledged without a conduit like a blog.

The feeling I have to help others is overwhelming at times. And so, through this blog, my journey continues…

The PDI’s Gibbs Cadiz isn’t wrong when he said that after the tumultuous Brian Gorrell blog, it will not take long for those people whose names were severely soiled to party again.

Wikipedia says that “among those mentioned in the blog include lifestyle columnist and socialite Celine Lopez, who is described as the "Paris Hilton of Asia". Lopez is the cover of UNO Magazine for this month. I don’t know if UNO’s comic/editor, RJ Ledesma is trying to be smart-alecky and insensate.

Whatever he thinks, one thing is for sure. Ledesma YOU are doing a great disservice to our country!

Bong Austero of Manila Standard Today stated that "a more realistic appraisal of the authentic social value that these so-called 'socialites' provide", that there is "something not right in a setup where wealth and excessive lifestyles are flaunted and regularly splashed across the pages of newspapers as if they are the most natural things in the world while the majority (of Filipinos) live below the poverty line".

With an unparalleled thirst to feed their “vanities”, the swinging camera whores morphed into an organized quasi-vulgar social sorority (the Gucci Gang) of sorts that swiftly went on top of the food chain. For a moment, they seized the limelight like a thief in the night. A mere flash in the pan, they over extended their fifteen minutes of fame into eternal shame.

Now, as guiltless as ever, they are again quickly gaining a foothold in the “high-society” social niche and are establishing a labyrinthine protocol of control in Philippine society.

US gay men mostly getting HIV from main partners

Using data from the National HIV Behavioral Surveillance System (NHBS) involving gay men in five large US cities, researchers found that over 50% of HIV transmissions in US gay men are from main sexual partners and 46% of infections were from partners who were believed to be HIV-negative.

The researchers also found that 46% of infections were from partners who were believed to be HIV-negative and that approximately a quarter of transmissions were the result of insertive anal sex.

Gay men remain the group most affected by HIV in the US. There is some evidence that the number of new HIV infections in this group has increased since 2000. This has prompted calls for a renewed focus on the continuing HIV epidemic amongst gay men and the development of new prevention interventions.

Research from the Netherlands suggests that most HIV infections from young men are contracted from main sexual partners. To gain a better understanding of the dynamics of HIV transmission amongst gay men in the US, investigators designed a model using information obtained from the National HIV Behavioral Surveillance System (NHBS), involving gay men in five large US cities between 2003 and 2005, and the HIVNET Vaccine Preparedness Study (VPS), which recruited gay men in six US cities between 1995 and 1997.

Data from the NHBS study were used to estimate the number of gay men with main and casual partners in a year, the number of casual partners, the HIV status of partners, and sexual behaviour with partners. Information from the VPS was used to estimate the number of sexual episodes per year for men with main and casual partners.

A total of 3652 men from the NHBS study were included in the investigators’ analysis. These men reported 2395 main partners and 2850 casual partners. Based upon information from the VPS, the investigators estimated that the combined total of sex acts with main partners was 195,000 per year and 175,000 per year for casual partners.

The majority of HIV transmissions (68%) were estimated to be from main partners, with 32% thought to be from casual partners. This trend was observed in all age groups. The investigators also estimated that receptive anal intercourse was the main (69%) mode of HIV transmission. However, they attributed 28% of infections to insertive anal sex and 3% to oral sex.

Of the HIV transmissions from main partners, 46% were from individuals believed to be HIV-negative, with 38% from partners of unknown status, and 16% from partners who were known to be HIV-positive. The bulk (63%) of HIV transmissions from casual partners were from partners of unknown status. The investigators also found that more infections occurred from casual partners thought to be HIV-negative (24%) than HIV-positive (16%).

Annual HIV incidence was calculated at 2.2%.

The investigators believe that there are three reasons why there are more HIV transmissions from main rather than casual partners:
• Men had more sex with their main partner than casual partners.
• Men were more likely to have receptive anal sex with their main partner than a casual partner (40% of men reported that the last sex they had with a main partner involved receptive anal sex compared to 26% for a casual partner).
• Men were more likely to report unprotected receptive anal sex with their main partner than a casual partner.

The finding that 28% of HIV transmissions appear to be the result of insertive anal sex is stressed by the investigators. They comment “prevention counsellors should continue to emphasise that the risk of insertive anal intercourse, although lower than the risk of receptive anal intercourse, is still an important concern for men who have sex with men”.

They also emphasise that “among main partners, transmissions mostly arise from partners believed to be HIV-negative”. Furthermore, they note that individuals of unknown status accounted for most transmissions from casual partners. The group least likely to be responsible for HIV transmission to main or casual partners were men with diagnosed HIV infection.

Although over 50% of new HIV infections in the US are amongst gay men, the investigators note that only 22% of HIV prevention interventions designated as 'best-evidence' by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have been tested with gay men.

“New HIV prevention interventions for US men who have sex with men [MSM] are needed and should be responsive to current behavioral risk patterns and transmission characteristics of the US MSM epidemic”, conclude the investigators. “Our data suggest that the development and testing of HIV prevention interventions for MSM couples, a historically understudied area of HIV prevention, may be important as we approach the fourth decade of the US HIV epidemic.”

After all, this was not the first time Cpt. Faeldon had removed himself from his confinement. He also walked away from his hearing in December 2005 and was recaptured over a month later, but only after he posted videos of himself – by then a fugitive – inside various military camps, despite the proliferation of WANTED posters in all the said camps. This time around, after his second escape, he has made several public statements despite being the target of several police operations designed to flush him out. And despite the promise of a million peso reward, Cpt. Faeldon has been at large for over a year.
