Maybe - no, not maybe, rather absolutely - you should abandon this project since its clearly taking a toll on you, your health, and mental stability.
You fell into a horrific situation when you met DJ. I know Manila high society can be intoxicating but you should have taken more precaution and used some common sense - falling in love and investing in a business by poolside doesn't reflect good judgement - in fact, if you'd just done a cursory look-around, its well-known DJ is sketchy. You admitted in the interview that you only spent two weeks or so in Manila (which begs to wonder most of your intial juice comes from within this short time frame - so-and-so was acertained to do drugs at a party - didn't you dramtically explain that you contracted HIV underthe influence of E? and i'm not HIV or drugs bashing here - its simpley what you reported on yor blog).
Nonetheless, you enjoyed a fantastic few months in Bora and enjoyed your vision of paradise and made some good friends along the way. Its not an uncommon experience for expats in the Philippines.
One must take pause in recognizing the zeal with which Mojo and Grace embrace you - first of all, its good for thier ratings - yo uare a sensation now, dibah? - and secondly, Mo is Canadian and Grace is Korean. Your best friend is Filipina-Canadian and you "lived" in Bora, not exactly the most realistic representaion of the Philippines and it's culture since the society there has been largely manufactured to cater to tourist needs. its fantastic that you had such a wonderful relationship with your "yaya" in your few months in Boracay - but aren't you pushing forty?
Brian, i don't want to attack you but there are tremendous inconsistentcies in your narrative and while I believe you believe you are on a "mission" and have good intentions, plaplapla, per se, you have since day one of starting this blog been off-base and actually have caused more harm than good in the process.
Its really foolish to assume the martyr position for the injustices in the Philippines. Believe it or not, there are quite a few Filipino-penned blogs adressing these issues plus a strong tradition of free press/media - interuppted by the Marcos regime of course- but I don't suppose you know much about that, no? - but, um, going strong, since what, 1987. If you are going to be the Martin Luther King, Jr. for the Philippines it might be wise to brush up on a little history. Do you realize that maybe you're not getting any real domestic or international press because you are one of thousands of expats who come to the Philippines who get intoxicated by the quick fix, the easy life, and come to find its more complicated. You mention Darfur and all in your interview - in all honesty does your story even come close to that hardship? Hopefully you'll get your Tom ford sunglasses, tooth-whitening kit, gold necklace, etc back - lord knows why you were traveling with your baptismal papers and accordian folio whose contents you can't recall.
I'm not here to defend the fatuous and stupid GG and DJ and CL and all your obsessions - but you truly make a mockery of all the hard-working Filipinos around the world who have had to fight a history more hard-pressed than your Canadian and Austrailian growing up (...?). Because you grew up poor an dhave Pinoy friends does not make you Filipino. its lovely that you want to expose the injustices of the world for all but don't you have a lot more on your plate right now?
I don't think you are mercenary. I do think you've made countless bad decisions, starting with going into love and busines with DJ, and especially with starting this blog - which has really, truly brought out the worst in the Philippines. To give you the benefit of the doubt, you are tragically naive; however, as your blog has spread your perspective has become bloated and your personae increasingly narcissitic and zealous- you'd be hard pressed to find a rational person attending the Church of Brian. In this past two weeks alone you've destroyed the lives and futures of people you haven't even met and have had the nerve to say it was all in your justice. I know you're consumed by your own suffering but think about waht you've done to others.
ay, give yourself and the Philippines a break and go off quietly.
Ay, another thing you might not comprehend is that the Philippines has survived colonial opression from the Spanish, atrocities by the Jaanese, devastation through liberation by the US, and myriad corrupt regimes - meanwhile, Filipinos are the talented work force and professionals all ove rthe planet - you are taking advantage of of a kind and sympathetic human nature - the nerve to suggest that the party scene and bora injustices done to you by a well-known crook measure up in any way to the sacrifices and hard work of the common citizen.
You've become like the myriad white two-bit evangilist and snake-oil salesmen all over the Philippines like it or not.
i'm sorry you're going through a hard time. You've had a huge show of emotional support but you've long since played it out. Maybe you should take the move to canada as a time to put this to rest - what an awesome mess you've made indeed.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7510366480931064584.post-54373665101772702392008-05-14T23:54:00.000-04:002008-05-14T23:54:00.000-04:00Hi Brian!
