Proponents say the will of the people was overturned by the California Supreme Court, which allowed same-sex marriage earlier this year. This undermines the value of marriage, backers say.

Main arguments against: Foes argue that people should not be treated differently under the law because of their sexual orientation. Gays and lesbians should keep the right to marry like everyone else, say opponents.

The money

Major donors to the "yes" side: Knights of Columbus, Focus on the Family, members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Major donors to the "no" side: Pacific Gas & Electric; Robert Haas, chairman emeritus of Levi Strauss & Co.; director Steven Spielberg; Service Employees International Union's California State Council; California Teachers Assn.

http://www.latimes.com/news/local/politics/cal/la-me-proposition-8-2008nov04-html,0,3864457.htmlstory

-----------------------

"Much has been made about same-sex marriage changing the traditional definition of marriage. But marriage has evolved for thousands of years, from polygamous structures in which brides were so much chattel to today's idealized love matches. In seeking to add a sentence to California's Constitution that says, "Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized," Proposition 8 supporters seek to enforce adherence to their own religious or personal definition. The traditional makeup of families has changed too, in ways that many religious people find immoral. Single parents raise their children; couples divorce and blend families. Yet same-sex marriage is the only departure from tradition that has been targeted for constitutional eradication."

"Religions and their believers are free to define marriage as they please; they are free to consider homosexuality a sin. But they are not free to impose their definitions of morality on the state. Although I'm proud to be an American, I'm also very sad at the division that has almost paralyzed us from top to bottom. I agree with you that some 'Americans' can be quite hostile and a bit rude/ignorant when it comes time for others(outsiders?) to comment..
I enjoy this blog because it's well rounded with just the right amount of spunk. The people who come here to read and then comment also have a responsibility. Although I find some of the comments offensive I admire Brian for defending himself against people who hit and run. I'll always support Brian and is blog for many reasons. The fact that he is Australian/Canadian should have no bearing on the things he chooses to discuss. After all, it is his blog and he has shown time and time again his deep passion for the Philippines and all Filipinos. I highly doubt he would be engaged to a Filipino if his objective was to do harm to the race? I've never once doubted him or his story, which brought him to this point or his true concern and compassion for those Filipinos 'left behind'.

CHARGE!
Come on.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7510366480931064584.post-5215269623975692132008-11-03T23:06:00.000-05:002008-11-03T23:06:00.000-05:00Go Obama!Go Brian!Go to hell haters!TEAM BRIAN (Ca...Go Obama!
Go Brian!
Go to hell haters!

TEAM BRIAN (Canadian Chapter)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7510366480931064584.post-91267856723381308912008-11-03T22:48:00.000-05:002008-11-03T22:48:00.000-05:00to anon, 7:10:everyone is entitled to their opinio...to anon, 7:10:

everyone is entitled to their opinions. everywhere around the world, people are making comments about who they want to win on the US elections. clearly, since US is a superpower, the results of the elections will affect almost EVERYONE.

and with EVERYONE, it includes gay people, not just straight people. that includes brian and not just you, mr. american citizen.

"whatever happens here has nothing to do with you" --> have you heard of globalization? the increased interconnection of countries?

following your line of argument, i guess whatever brian writes about in his blog, has nothing to do with you too.

and my opinion, people like brian truly have the balls (more so than other straight men), to say what's on their minds and to fight for what they believe.

prop 8 or no prop 8, there's nothing wrong with hoping. brian maybe here in canada. but unlike you, he is not self-centred (i.e. not caring about people who can't vote on the US elections). he wants that right to be married to be enjoyed by other gay men elsewhere in the world. if he believes that gay marriage is just befitting, then there is nothing wrong with hoping and wanting other gay men to experience marriage too.

do people expressing their opinions disgust you THAT much?
if YES, then tough luck cause this is brian's blog and he can say whatever he wants.

-AngelaAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7510366480931064584.post-52448721115029216202008-11-03T22:10:00.000-05:002008-11-03T22:10:00.000-05:00I don't know why you are so concerned about Americ...I don't know why you are so concerned about American politics.whatever happens here has nothing to do with you. heck. you can't even vote here.Obama might win,but don't
count on that Prop 8.The fight over Prop 8 is not just for gay rights about getting married, but more on education in schools where the gay agenda will be pushed on young children.Read the local CA papers about this before you start screaming homophobia.people like you are the ones that turn neutrals into homophobics. so learn to shut up.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7510366480931064584.post-23575645840953824802008-11-03T21:04:00.000-05:002008-11-03T21:04:00.000-05:00it would be really nice when he wins... =)it would be really nice when he wins... =)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
