"It is not only a great occasion in our history, but also in the global history of the equality battle," said Iceland's President Olafur Ragnar Grimsson in his speech officially presenting Johanna as Prime Minister.

Although, in a perfect world, as many readers have noted, the race, gender, and sexual orientation of our leaders should be completely irrelevant, it remains a fact that this is a milestone in our world, and another significant step towards the goal of judging our leaders on their abilities and their character, rather than on such superficial distinctions.

I agree with the President. It's all so forward thinking and morally intact with the message of humanity. Do not judge, but accept. Do not hate but understand and love. How amazing and what a celebration this truly is. The worlds first gay Prime Minister or any openly gay leader has finally achieved the leadership prize in Iceland(or any other country for that matter). In such a bold fashion as well. It's so easy for people to say gays, lesbians transgendered people (and all the rest) already have our human rights in place. Not at all true.

But the truth is, barriers continue to be broken down every single day. And this is just another day.

But what a great day it is.
